A small business with four employees might conduct an
employee appraisal something like this:
Jim: “So, how am I doing, boss?”
Boss: “Well, Jim…you work hard. You’re punctual. You
increased our productivity by 30 per cent with your new
efficiency flow chart model. Really, you’re only
problem is that you work too hard. I’m going to give
you a raise. And take next Friday off.”
Here’s how an employee appraisal might go in a large
company with over 1000 employees:
Jim: “So boss, how am I doing?”
Boss: [shuffling papers and looking embarrassed]
“I’m sorry, what’s your name again?”
Even if you’re closer to the first example than
the second, it might still be wise to invest in an
employee appraisal software application. It works by
giving managerial staff clear and consistent criteria to
evaluate staff. It makes life easier, quicker and
simpler by automating the employee appraisal process.
Accurate employee appraisals will make things like
raises, contract negotiation, hiring and firing much
less painless. It makes it easier to reward exceptional
employees, refocus average employees and eliminate those
who are performing poorly. Turnover and low morale both
cost money. Employee appraisals give feedback that can
cut down on these two unpleasant workplace dysfunctions.
The appropriate software just makes it more efficient. |
